Gents, how old is Gutterfighting?
How old is our little hobby?
Well, did it begin with fairbairn? Capt Smith? Thornberry? or does the answer begin with Japanese jiu jitsu, kempo, yawara, tai-jitsu? It may, but I say research close-combat and you will probably find that organized systems of mayhem [ not sports] existed to as long as man had to survive!
Recently while going through my books, manuals etc, I ran across a German manual entitled VOLLSTADIGES RING-BUCH by JOHANN GEORG PASSCHEN. The date of the book is 1659! the term ring-buch and fect buch were familiar terms from the 1400's to 1700's for German manuals on wrestling [ ringen] and fencing or weapons use[ fecthen] . However THIS RING-BUCH is a different matter in every sense. It is not a wrestling book but a manual of anti-grappling combatives that would make one think that the Japanese race learned jiu jitsu from the teutons.
This manual deals with how to handle encounters in the street against holds, chokes, attemped takedowns, punches, attemped smashes on the head from weapons. How to use natural weapons to counter and attack like heads, forearms [parrying] , elbows, knees, edge of hand blows, toe kicks , some grappling etc. I would like to review this manual for our gutterfighting brothers and also to thank Carl, Clint for always encouraging me to look , find and search more.
